ineffective. If it were not for Jobs leadership prowess, the firm might be suffering and it could be if in fact something happens to this much revered CEO. At the
same time, Jobs is not perfect. Apple flies on faith to a large extent and this can be detrimental. What Apple needs is more practical leadership and a Plan B.
Although many things have gone well for this firm that struggles against steep competition, it has endured problems. The future of Apple is uncertain and it certainly pays to have
a stronger leadership base to meet the challenges of the twenty first century. While Apple has improved a great deal over the years, corporate governance is rather negative, at least
as investors perceive things (Salkever, 2004). The board of directors is looked upon as "a bit of a lap dog for the charismatic Jobs" (Salkever, 2004). In other words, Steve
Jobs takes over and rarely allows any real input from the executives who are supposed to be in charge. Yes, Jobs is to provide the primary leadership force and vision,
but he is not supposed to be the only one to come up with ideas. Further, the board has not scolded him for the negative performance he put forth in
2002 (Salkever, 2004). This was a bad year economically for all. It was shortly after the terrorist attack for example. That said, Dell was able to do much
better than Apple in that same year (Salkever, 2004). Hence, a fierce competitor managed to get through the problems in 2002, but Apple did not do as well. Some
attribute this fact to weak leadership in the company. Former Vice-President Al Gore had even been appointed to the board in 2003 but that did not improve the worries of
