translated into the public sector. This includes the military although the military is an organization that demands obedience and rightfully so. There must be a structure in all organizations and
that organizational structure in the military is very clear to every member. There is a gradation of officers, of non-commissioned officers and of enlisted men and women. Those with lesser
rank must obey those with higher rank. This is a critical lesson every military person must learn. Imagine troops in Iraq. If the enlisted men to not obey the orders
of sergeants or officers, they would be more likely to get killed. That example describes the authoritarian or autocratic model of leadership. It is appropriate in many situations, such
as fire drills or other emergencies in a school or business. In non-emergency times, the military uses a variety of leadership styles. Each person in charge will basically choose
their own style but the military, like private businesses, have learned that more distributed, more participative leadership styles have better results. This essay explains and discusses four leadership styles: authoritative,
participative, laissez-faire, and blended. Authoritative is not authoritarian and blended is basically situational. It is important for military leaders to know and understand many different kinds of leadership styles and
