This 5 page paper discusses leadership in education. The research focusing on educational leadership is plentiful, yet, despite the volumes, leadership remains an elusive concept. This essay reviews some of the literature and what is said about the characteristics and theories of leadership in educational settings. practitioners and other writers have discussed the importance of effective school leadership and much of that research has focused on the leadership needed to bring about changes and reform geared
for improved student achievement (Hord, 2002). The research focusing on educational leadership is plentiful, yet, despite the volumes, leadership remains an elusive concept. NUC (Northwestern University) suggests that "it is
difficult to generalize about leadership because the conditions that give rise to it vary from situation to situation, and from one historical time to another. Effective leadership in a battle
situation is likely to be very different from leadership in a high-tech corporate situation" (2002). NUC also suggests that it may be that people are looking for leadership in the
wrong places. It is neither a person nor a thing. It only exists in the mind. For example, followers know a leader and leadership can only exist if there are
followers (NUC, 2002). Ted Sizer initiated the Coalition of Essential Schools in 1984. The Coalition initially focused only on grades 9 - 12 but it has since incorporated all the
grade levels K - 12. During that first year, twelve high schools spanning seven states joined the coalition. There are now 251 full members, 275 planning schools and 558 exploratory
schools (AEL, 2000). The major goal of this coalition is to "help create schools where students learn to use their minds well" (AEL, 2000). These are a number of
guidelines, which include nine "Common Principles of the Essential School" in this model (AEL, 2000). Schools use the components and the principles to redesign themselves and their leadership style
