is theoretically quite possible. Developed by Fiedler and colleagues, contingency theory posits that leadership styles are either "task-motivated" or "relationship-motivated" and situations that leaders face are assess by three factors:
1) leader-member relations; 2) task structure, and 3) position power (Northouse 75). According to this theory, certain styles of leadership are best suited to specific circumstances. Through instruments, such as
the Least Preferred Co-workers scale (LPC), an individuals leadership style can be determined. Work environments can be evaluated by according to the three situational variable listed above, which places any
organizational context into one of eight categories (Northouse 77). However, the validity of contingency theory has been questioned on several points. First of all, it does not explain fully
why individuals with certain leadership traits are better in some situations than others (Northouse 79). Also, the LPC scale as been questioned, as it is problematic for respondents to comprehend
why their descriptions of another individual are reflective of their own leadership qualities. Therefore, in determining which candidate is best for which leadership position, other factors should be considered as
