change. The leader needs to recognize and understand the resistance and develop strategies to overcome it. There are numerous change theories and models. Kurt Lewin provided a three-step change theory.
The steps are to unfreeze the status quo, the second step is movement towards the change, and the third step is refreezing the new behaviors (Kristonis, 2005). Lippitt offered a
seven-step process that expanded Lewins model. The steps are: diagnose the problem, assess motivation, asses resources, develop action plans, assign roles to change agents, maintain the change, and the change
agent withdraws from their role (Kristonis, 2005). John Kotter also offered a multi-step change process. The states are: establish a sense of urgency, create a coalition, a group of people
who will help with the change process, develop a vision and a strategy, communicate the change vision, empower employees, generate short-term wins so the team knows they are progressing, consolidate
gains to produce more change, and anchor the changes in the organizational culture (Kotter, 1996). Karlsberg and Adler (2007) identified the habits of successful change leaders: provide an inspiring
mission and a clear direction for the group, build a strong leadership team, communicate regularly and frequently, be visible during the change process, and reward performance that contributes to the
change. In any clinical setting, it is beneficial to implement evidence-based practices. A plan needs to be developed that includes action steps. Using Kotters model, a sense of urgency
needs to be created. Employees need to feel that it is urgent and important to make changes in practices. Communication is a key in all change models. There are many
