to be higher. The task of communication is important for a leader due to the nature of communication which needs to take place. There is no singular definition of
a leader, but there is an agreement that a leader will inspire and motive others, will have followers and will have their own vision (Mintzberg et al, 2008; Kotter, 1990).
These are all tasks that will require communication to take place, with the leader able to successfully communicate their message to their audience so it is received and understood and
has the desired effect. The process of communication may be seen as simple, but there are many things that can go wring, leaders have to be aware of the
potential barriers and overcome them. The communication process starts with the communicator sending a message, this has to be encoded, and then it is sent over a communication medium, for
example this may be face to face verbal communication, it may be through a written medium or through a multimedia format. The message may be enhanced or undermined through the
medium chosen. The last stage is the way that the audience receives the message which will include hearing the message and decoding it (Barrett, 2007). At all these stages
there are potential barriers which may result in a failure of the communication to achieve its objective. The leader has to send a clear message that us not muddled, using
the right medium and with the right elements, not only in terms of words, but accompanying or supporting elements such tone of voice and ensuring that actions support the rhetoric.
