Theories evolved from this one to Trait Theory, Behavioral Theories, including Role Theory and the Managerial Grid, Participative Leadership theories, such as Lewins and Likerts; then, Situational Leadership that included people like Hersey and Blanchard, Vroom and Yetton, and Houses Path-Goal theory; the next big push was Contingency Theories and included Fiedlers work, Cognitive Resource Theory and Strategic Contingencies Theory (McNamara, 2007). To these were added Transactional Leadership theories, such as the Leader-Member Exchange theory, and Transformational Leadership theories including such theorists as Bass, Burns and Kouzes and Posner (McNamara, 2007). In between these, appearing at various times was Servant Leadership Theory. This essay will discuss two of these many theories: Situational Leadership and Servant Leadership. The first emphasizes selecting the appropriate style or action for the existing situation. The second emphasizes service. Hersey and Blanchard initially introduced the situational leadership model. They had initially called this model the Life-Cycle Theory of Leadership and some authors continue to use their original title. They may have been influenced by Reddins 3-D Management Style Theory and Black and Moutons Management Style Grid. They pointed out that both these models emphasized attitude, such as the degree of concern the leader had for completing the product versus their concern for the people involved (Hersey and Blanchard, 1996). They asserted "all managers should be concerned about both production and people. But that concerned attitude can be expressed in different leadership styles, depending on the situation" (p. 42) and offered their alternative, the Life-Cycle Theory, which they originally published in a 1969 article (Hersey and Blanchard, 1996).
