necessary. Introduction Humans have been wondering about what constitutes a good leader for centuries. According to the Chinese strategist, Sun Tzu, in The Art of War
(510 BC)"Leadership is a matter of intelligence, trustworthiness, humane-ness, courage, and stern-ness . . . A general should have these five virtues . . .Reliance on intelligence alone
results in rebelliousness. Exercise of humane-ness alone results in weakness. Fixation on trust results in folly. Dependence on the strength of courage results in violence. Excessive stern-ness in command
results in cruelty. When one has all five virtues together, each appropriate to its function, then one can be a military leader." Obviously, this was expressed for a military leadership
position at a time when only certain roles were available for leadership. Yet there remains a great deal of truth in this ancient advice. Bring that forward a few
years, or so, and according to the Corporate Development Group (1999),providers of a leadership diagnostic system, the alignment between strategy, culture and leadership has proven to be the critical
