Life-Cycle Theory of Leadership. The authors proposed that the leaders behavior needed to change relative to the followers level of maturity (Hersey and Blanchard, 1996). They explained the leader would
be involved in telling, selling, participating, and delegating dependent upon the followers maturity (Hersey and Blanchard, 1996). The leader might have to be more directive, i.e., telling, when the follower
was new to the situation because the follower would not yet have a level of comfort with the job or task. As the followers level of comfort and skill increased,
the leader could move through the four styles to suit the followers knowledge, skill and comfort zones (Hersey and Blanchard, 1996). Two other styles that have gained a great deal
of attention in recent years are transformational leadership and servant leadership. Transformational leadership is collaborative and it is about change. Transformational leaders are perceived as change agents, they are charismatic
and capable of persuading others to buy into the leaders vision and to work towards that vision. While transformational leaders may work differently, they tend to share certain characteristics: empathy,
vision, self-assurance, commitment, that ability to encourage others to work up to their level of competence and they are willing to take risks (ChangingMinds.com, 2008). Transformational leaders inspire others and
they are passionate about reaching the vision (ChangingMinds.com, 2008). Jack Welch was an exceptional leader. Welch was described as being "larger than life. . . tireless, brilliant, fearless, ruthless,
heartless and sharply focused on making money for GE shareholders" (Bonsignore, 2001, p. 23). He led by a set of principles that included: having a clear vision, getting the right
