argued that not only can leadership influence culture, there is a positive responsibility on leadership to ensure that a positive culture is created and maintained as a part of their
responsibility to the business owners and the employees. The culture of a company is the way in which it operates on an
interpersonal level. It is an intangible which can be difficult to isolate. Just as when traveling the world cultural differences can be seen between the diverse countries characteristics the same
is true of companies and organizations. The culture will embody the aspects such as morals, ethics general attitudes and the use of tools such as empowerment (Veiga, 1993). According
to Trice and Bayer cultures are collective, emotionally charged, historically based, inherently symbolic, and dynamic (Trice and Beyer, 1993). This relates more norms and values that are inherent in a
culture. Norms may be seen as the behavior that is seen as normal within that organization, the way that employees will automatically and instinctually react once they have been integrated
into the culture. Values may be seen as the definition against which the norms are displayed or behavior formulated. In some organizations is may be culturally acceptable to claim a
sick day when tired, in others this may be unacceptable. Therefore, culture is the result of a number of influences, not only leadership, but events of the past and the
impact these have had on values and expectations. The question is, when there are many complex influences on corporate culture, how can a leader influence and change or maintain a
culture. Leadership can have a direct influence though the actions, and an indirect influence in the way strategies are developed and working
