by K. Von Huben 8/2010 Please EXECUTIVE SUMMARY The objective of this paper is to
discuss the leadership style of two executives from widely divergent companies. The paper discusses the findings of Dulewicz and Higgs, who have done a meta-analysis of the changing ways in
which leadership styles are evaluated. Based on their work, the paper then describes Bill Gates and James E. Burke, the CEOs of Microsoft and Johnson & Johnson; why they were
chosen; and what their leadership styles are. These two men were chosen because their companies do very different things. Microsoft is of course the worlds largest software developer while Johnson
& Johnson, though widely diversified, is first and foremost a personal care products company. Burke is no longer with Johnson & Johnson but he was chosen because he was CEO
at the time of the so-called Tylenol scandal, a horrific crime perpetrated against innocent people that could well have put Johnson & Johnson out of business. Burkes ability to handle
a crisis is a perfect example of leadership at its best. Bill Gates was chosen because he has taken an idea he had in college and built it into
a billion-dollar empire. Both men are strong leaders; the paper explores their tenure with their companies to see what their leadership styles are like. Introduction Although it is
