followers. We know that people will follow someone whom they trust, respect, and like. People are far more likely to follow someone who supports them than someone who does not
support them. There are numerous lists that identify the traits and characteristics of effective leaders in the literature. Some of the most common items on those lists include vision, charisma,
intelligence, excellent communication skills, intuitiveness, trustworthiness, integrity, high energy, commitment, and risk-taking (American Library Association, 2007). John Ryan, former chancellor of the State University of New York, commented that every
effective leader he has ever known shared three qualities: vision, communication, and judgment. Effective leaders are driven by a clear vision about which they are passionate and to which
they are committed. Every good leader has a vision of success. Henry Ford, for example, wanted to have a car families could afford to purchase and Steve Jobs wanted a
computer anyone could use (Ryan, 2009). They are passionate about achieving the vision and they are able to persuade others to adopt that vision and work towards it. That requires
exceptionally good communication skills. They communicate effectively by listening to people and responding appropriately (Ryan, 2009). They are able to explain their ideas. Judgment involves risk-taking. Effective leaders take more
risks but not foolhardy ones. They can evaluate and problem solve. Judgment is centered in a persons values and beliefs (Ryan, 2009). Effective leaders are ethical. It is not always
