The leader-follower theory is also known as the leader-member exchange theory (LMX), which has also been referred to as the Vertical Dyad Linkage Theory (ChangingMinds, 2010; Rothbauer-Wanish, 2009). This is a leadership theory that focuses on the relationships and interactions between leaders and followers. The theory views leadership as a series of interactions between the leader and followers (University of Minnesota Duluth, 2010; Triplett). Triplett (2007) explains that leader-follower theory is about the relationships between leaders and followers. This theory sees leadership "as a group process that arises from the social categorization and depersonalization processes associated with social identity" (Triplett, 2007, p. 56). Social identity is about how we perceive ourselves in terms of our perceived boundaries of the group. This perception is influenced by our own level of self-esteem as well as our own attitudes and behaviors (Triplett, 2007). Early studies of leaders and followers considered in-group and out-group interactions. The in-group was comprised of some members of the group that the leader perceived as advisors and assistants and the out-group was everyone else. Later studies, however, focused on the quality of the interactions or the exchange between leader and member/follower. These later studies propose that all members/followers in the group feel that they are part of the in-group and leadership is based on building partnerships (University of Minnesota Duluth, 2010).
