This paper reviews a study by Joseph, Havstad, Ownby, Peterson (2005) that finds no correlation between urban black children’s blood lead levels and their propensity for developing asthma. to exploring the problems of lead poisoning. Indeed, lead poisoning can affect a wide gamut of physiological function including that performed by the brain, kidneys, bone marrow (Industry Group
80, 2000). Lead poisoning has been associated with a myriad of other problems including "delayed development, behavior disorders, joint pain and swelling, anemia, nausea, hyperactivity and low birth weight"
as well as a number of other physiological problems (Adams-Wade, 2000). Disturbingly, an estimated one million children a year in the
United States alone are impacted by exposure to lead (Industry Group 80, 2000). Some 4.4 percent of children under six have elevated blood-lead levels (Chan, 2000). Children from
low-income families are particularly at risk (Industry Group 80, 2000). This relationship exists primarily because children from low-income families are more likely to live in older housing and be
exposed to lead paint, the most common correllant with lead poisoning (Industry Group 80, 2000). Soil and dust contaminated by paint chips is another mechanism of exposure (Industry Group
80, 2000). African American and Hispanic children are particularly at risk (Joseph, Havstad, Ownby, Peterson, et al, 2005) in this equation. Joseph,
Havstad, Ownby, Peterson, et al (2005) explore lead poisoning as it relates to asthma. These researchers explore the hypothesis that "differential risk of lead poisoning among urban minority children
may contribute to increased risk of asthma in this population" (Joseph, Havstad, Ownby, Peterson, et al, 2005, 900). They studied 4,634 one to three year old children, following their
blood lead levels, correlating those levels to their risk for developing asthma, and analyzing that relationship using multiple variable analysis techniques.
