CDC indicate that a BLL over 10 micrograms per deciliter is dangerous and should be addressed by a healthcare provider (Graff, et al, 2006). The CDC also indicates that BLLs
below this level have been associated with deficits in cognitive and academic skills (Graff, et al, 2006). It has been estimated that nearly a million American school children have elevated
BLLs. These children usually live in older homes in the Northeast or Midwest. If a childs BLL goes over 70, this can result in "seizures, coma and eventual death" if
medical intervention is not immediate (Graff, et al, 2006, p. 596). Lead poisoning affects multiple physiological systems and is particularly harmful to the development of young children. Lead
affects childrens "hematopoietic, immune, nervous and renal systems" (Graff, et al, 2006, p. 596). Exposure to lead has been strongly linked to developmental delays and is known to contribute to
aggressive and anti-social behavior, as well as "difficulty reading, distractibility and lower IQ" (Graff, et al, 2006, p. 596). Childrens exposure to lead typically occurs through either inhalation or ingestion
of paint chips. The primary method of exposure is when the child lives in an older homes that have been contaminated by lead paint. Children are also exposed to lead
through eating contaminated food or by drinking contaminated water. Also, Pica, which is a term used to refer to the ingesting non-food items, such as soil contaminated with lead, is
