I had worked my way up through the ranks of society, living by my wits, and surviving only by Gods grace; then at last my ninth master, a constable, secured
a wife for me and set me off on the path of success. For many years everything went wonderfully. It seemed all the difficulties of my early life were behind
me. In truth, it was becoming boring. (The student should establish Lazarillos character early on, in order to establish that this is the same type of person as in the
novel.) But then one day, I met a sorcerer; he had another name for himself, but I cannot recall it. (The student should explain how Lazarillo came to be in
New York.) He drew me into a dark little shop and pointed to a spot on the floor; it looked a bit like a star, but on closer examination could
have been blood. "Do you see that?" he asked me. It was so plain that my suspicions were aroused. "What if I do?" I asked. Suddenly he pushed
a small purse into my hands, and I could feel that it was stuffed with coins. "If you stand there and shut your eyes," he told me, "this money is
yours. Stand still, shut your eyes, and wait." I did, and something began to happen. The air began to hum.. I tried to open my eyes, but I could not;
