There are relatively few jobs that require licensing and are governed by specific laws and regulations. Insurance sales is one of those. In my
specific situation I am subject to regulations beyond those applicable only to salespeople in that I also own an Allstate agency and I am licensed in three states: Pennsylvania, Delaware
and Maryland. My licenses and practice enable me to write all types of personal and commercial insurance products, including home, auto, life, health and other types of insurance protection
for individuals and businesses. The purpose here is to review the laws and regulations that govern my practice. Licensing All three of
the states require specific pre-licensing education; at least Delaware and Pennsylvania require 24 hours credit for initial licensing. The applicant must take and pass prescribed courses from approved education
vendors before being allowed to sit for the licensing test in any of the three states. Maintaining the license varies some between the states; all require ongoing continuing education
to renew provider licenses. Maryland The initial license gained in Maryland and each renewal term thereafter is on a two-year cycle. Maryland
maintains two broad categories, Property/Casualty and Life/Health. Agents must be licensed in both to be able to sell policies in both divisions. Each also requires proof of 16
hours of continuing education during each two-year licensing period to renew an existing license (Maryland Insurance Administration Continuing Education Program and Pre-Licensing Education, 2006).
