that his approach as that of a medical anthropologist, and that, from this standpoint, he intends to work toward a conception of age that provides a "study that focuses on how people comprehend the body and its behavior in time" (xv). Introduction Cohen introduces his topic by discussing the role that the appearance of aging woman had on a Hindu uprising in Bulooa. This leads into an explanation of how this book is about the ways that old people are represented, "as mad or otherwise different in what they do or say" (4). It is also about how these differences relate to all sorts of moments within a culture. The topic of aging has garnered quite a bit of attention recently, in India and elsewhere, because there are, or soon will be, "too many old people in our country, or in other peoples countries" (4). India has responded to this fact with a variety of books that have the identical title, "Aging in India" (4). Cohens book contributes to this ongoing critique, but from a different standpoint?thus, the difference in title (5). Cohens approach draws heavily on his own research , which includes the "set of bodily conditions and social practices organized and known as Alzheimers disease" (5). Therefore, it includes his own background in Canada and the United States before coming to India. Chapter 1: Orientations The title of this work immediately takes on added significance in the first section of this chapter, which is entitled "The Zagreb Tamasha." The term "tamasha" is Hindi for a "commotion, a performance," or as in this case, a "social drama" (15-16).
