History The population segment known as sexual offenders has developed as a special sub-set within the corrections system, due to the nature of the offense. They are looked down upon
by other inmates and are often the victims of assault and intimidation. The population is Obviously, the challenges facing this population segment are enormous. First is the basic idea
that an answer must be found for their behavior so they do not commit these crimes again. Second, they face a difficult time during incarceration. Third, they may or may
not get the treatment they need. Finally, sex offenders are now listed on the Internet, along with their photos and addresses; this has led to at last one assault on
a registered offender and suggests that the attitude of the population generally is that such offenders offer no hope of being cured or of ever taking their place within the
general population again; they are classified as "monsters" and "deviants" who have forfeited any right to consideration from others. Once a person, or group of people, has been classified as
the "Other," its easy to discard them. This population will continue to face challenges in the future; including discrimination, hatred, and the disturbing reality of what amounts to life-long
surveillance. Many sources are suggesting that registering sex offenders and making their identity public is simply forcing them to lie, and is thus pushing them to the fringes of society
