be visible. Introduction Grace Ho and Associates is a growing law firm currently with five attorneys and several support staff personnel. Billing
is manual as it always has been; the bookkeeper routinely has difficulty securing all of the data she needs from each attorney and much of that information likely is contrived
or recorded from memory rather than from records. The bookkeeper uses the data of questionable accuracy to create client invoices and build the foundation for the firms annual tax
returns. Grace Ho seeks to expand the practice to include additional attorneys and support staff members and believes that automated billing will be beneficial for the company.
Client invoices merely present a total amount due and appears to include a separate surcharge for "overhead." Clients are unhappy and attorneys grouse that
they should not be troubled with administrative duties. The purpose here is to identify workable alternatives for the practice as it grows. Automated Billing
There are no less than a dozen software packages that would be appropriate for use at this practice. Abacus Law(r) is a general-use product centered at a
single computer; PerfectLaw(r) is a much more comprehensive software package that integrates not only time tracking and billing, but also provides capabilities for overseeing the state of accounts receivable.
PerfectLaw(r) also allows user-defined cost categories for cost accounting information while simultaneously providing clients with itemized bills rather than only an invoice with undefined charges.
