even resolve a dangerous conflict. For this reason, it is vitally important for all law enforcement professionals to gain an understanding of how communication impacts their professional duties, and learn
to effectively employ critical communication skills in a variety of circumstances. This paragraph helps the student introduce the scenario upon which the paper is based. In order to best understand
how communication is effectively employed in a variety of law enforcement contexts, a hypothetical scenario might prove useful. Suppose that one were a police detective, and that one heard a
report from dispatch regarding a homicide at a nearby location. Upon responding to this report, the officer in question might find his or her self the first to arrive on
the scene. Being the first to arrive means that one will inherit a unique set of responsibilities; being calm, controlling the scene, and collecting information at this juncture may be
the difference between a successful case and a departmental failure. In this particular case, it is vitally important to act as effectively as possible because the nature of the crime
is so severe. A teenage male has been shot at a corner gas station in a low income neighborhood. As soon as the officer arrives, he or she may well
be approached by a number of witnesses, each of whom will represent special challenges: a young child who was playing outside, a deaf individual who was pumping gas at the
