rights of the accused, and their impact on the overall efficiency of the criminal justice system from the perspective of the Crime Control Model. Discussion CSI: Crime Scene Investigation is
the most popular show on television, and as a result, everyone today is an expert in forensics. However, since this is a TV show, not real life, Grissom and his
crew never make mistakes, always get the right person, and wrap things up neatly in 60 minutes (well, 42 actually; 18 minutes these days go to advertisers, which is the
real crime). Be that as it may, we are now all familiar with highly technical law enforcement techniques, including DNA samples, retinal scans, and fingerprints, as well as non-biological techniques
such as wiretaps and surveillance cameras. All of this begs the question: just because we can do these things, should we? Should we share DNA information on a person across
the various agency databases, possibly with the result that private information becomes public and his life is ruined? For instance, lets say that a DNA test reveals that Mr. Smith,
who is later proven innocent of the crime hes being investigated for, is the father of Mrs. Browns child. Mrs. Brown has never told her husband about Mr. Smith, nor
did she intend to. Now the information is public, the Browns insurance carrier gets suspicious and talks to Mr. Brown, and several lives go down in flames. Its melodramatic of
course but it could happen, and is likely to happen more and more frequently as information we thought was secure is no longer secure. Lets just take two examples
