what parents may not realize is that they invite strangers into their home every day via the Internet. One of the dangers of the digital age is that pedophiles can
use the Internet to contact children and lure children into meeting them. More commonly, pedophiles use the digital exchange of information via the Internet to exchange or sell pictures or
video depicting child sexual abuse. This means, of course, that for every picture or video exchanged on the Internet in this manner, a child was sexually abused. The problem
of digital child pornography disseminated over the Internet is a profound one because it is difficult for countries to enforce laws within their own jurisdiction and geographical boundaries when material
available for download can be accessed from anywhere in the world (Lobez, 1998). Law enforcement officers encounter situations where material that is illegal in one country can be accessed over
the Internet from another country where the material is no illegal (Lobez, 1998). As this suggests, it is important that countries provide police with the legal sanctions they require in
order to crack down on child abuse over the Internet. A report by the Parliamentary Joint Committee on National Crime, "Organized Criminal Paedophile Activity" (1995), indicates that to be
a pedophile, as such, is not a crime under Australian law, as there is "no common law or statutory definition in Australia of the word." However, abuses associated with pedophilia,
such as "rape, sexual assault, indecency" or "making or possessing child pornography" are covered as illegal activities under Australian legal statutes (Organized criminal, 1995). While pedophilia, as a term, refers
