In this text, Lafore gives his interpretation as to the causes of World War I. He posited that Siberian nationalism was a contributing factor to the war. The long fuse was a considerable time period that extended from the mid- to late 1800s up to the summer before the war. There were numerous events that contributed to the war, not one single event. Because there were so many events occurring over such a period of time, this time frame was referred to as "The Long Fuse." Like a fuse to an explosive, it kept going until it culminated in actual warfare. That war was the First World War. Although many factors contributed to the war, Serbia was significant in the wars development. Lafore gives the reader a virtual mechanism for understanding not only the other causes that lead to World War I, but also the contribution of Serbian nationalism in this event. There was not one cause that lead to the war, but a combination of many factors that lead to the first world war. Lafore emphasized that many actions were taken that the people taking them knew could possibly lead to war, yet they did not refrain from those actions. Lafore seems to shed light on how the threat to Austria and Hungarys integrity was affected by Serbian nationalism. In fact, Lafore points to the Austria-Hungary conflict with Serbia as the main cause of the war. The reason for the conflict is the Serbian nationalism and the structure of Austria-Hungary, which was a nation state at the time.
