to the domestic sphere, while also offering a template for female identification that departs from the restrictions inherent in that role. Esquivel signals the reader that Titas story
has broader implications early on when she recounts the details of Titas birth, which resulted from Titas weeping in the womb from the smell of onions. The babys reaction to
the cutting of onions is so severe that it results in her own premature birth on the kitchen table. After the uproar from the birth has died down, Nacha,
a family servant, sweeps up the salt left from Titas tears and there is enough to fill a ten-pound sack, which is later used for cooking (Esquivel, 1994). This
almost supernatural birth signals that not only that sorrow will be Titas lot, but that her realm is the kitchen. For her entire life, the outside world lay beyond the
kitchen. While this sounds as if the kitchen and the domestic sphere were a prison, this is not the way that Esquivel presents it. Rather this author shows
that the feminine sphere, i.e. the domestic sphere, is nurturing and fulfilling, an area where women have control and can be creative. The is shown through the way that recipes
and the preparation of food are woven into the fabric of the novel. Each chapter revolves around a recipe that is given at the beginning of the chapter. Titas diary/recipe
