husbands won the election; their input into governmental affairs is therefore indirect. As they struggle to define roles for themselves, some have chosen to assume a traditional role as
a wife, mother and caregiver, which appears to be that chosen by Laura Bush; others have become activists and worked with their husbands in the political arena (Eleanor Roosevelt and
Hillary Clinton). Half the country will adore the activists and despise the homebodies; the other half will screech that women should stay out of politics and stay in
the kitchen where they belong. In other words, although most of the flak is usually directed at the President, the First Lady takes some solid criticism in her own
right. This paper explores Laura Bushs communication style and influence in the current administration. The First Defender George W. Bush is arguably one of the
most despised presidents in history, with fully half the country solidly against everything he does. But he has a great defender in his wife, and she manages to deflect
a lot of criticism, and even more importantly, make his policies acceptable, or at least stops the press corps from asking tough questions about them. On Saturday, April 30, the
White House Correspondents Association held its annual dinner, and the First Lady "brought down the house" with a "string of withering one-liners that skewered her husbands sleeping (and, well, never
mind) habits ...and, of course, her own poor, pitiful plight as a long-suffering spouse. Ladies and gentlemen, I am a desperate housewife, she deadpanned. I mean, if those women
