not belong to that culture. Discussion For many years, conventional wisdom held that immigrants should strive to "assimilate" into the mainstream culture of the United States as quickly as possible,
giving up their native culture, traditions, and even their language. That belief is being re-examined today, and its now generally thought that "mainstreaming" isnt necessarily a good thing, and
that its better if immigrants learn to function in American culture but also retain their "roots," in effect giving them the best of both worlds. This isnt always
easy to do, first because America doesnt really welcome immigrants, and second because as members of the dominant culture, I believe Americans feel that everyone should fit in with them.
That puts a lot of pressure on the new arrivals and sometimes it comes out in unexpected or unfortunate ways. Of course it can cut both ways, since "Laughing
in English" by Cathy Davidson tells the story of an American woman who lives in Japan, and teaches oral English to non-English speakers. Davidsons story is apparently less well-known
than it might be, but the very lack of attention given to it might lead us to conclude that the situation it recounts doesnt resonate with readers as much as
Honigs work. That is, we appear to be less interested in the experiences of Americans in other cultures than we are in the experiences of immigrants to this one.
