Essay / Research Paper Abstract

A 3 page books review of this text, edited by Robert N. Gweynne and Cristobal Kay. The editors address the fact that Latin American studies over the past several decades have been highly fragmented. Studies performed within the realm of various disciplines, i.e., economics, political science, etc., have alluded to a broader context only in passing, if at all. Therefore, the stated intention of the editors in compiling this text is to offer a holistic evaluation of the transformation of Latin American that characterizes the region's recent history. To accomplish this purpose, the editors adopt a "political economy approach," which "consciously tries to integrate political, economic, social and geographical phenomena" (Gweynne and Kay 3). Bibliography lists 2 sources.

The 2004 edition is the second edition of the text and it offers updates of previous material that students of Latin American culture will appreciate. The 13 chapters are grouped into 4 sections. Part 1, entitled "Globalization and Modernity," contains 6 chapters, which are characterized by the editors preferred political economy approach. Part 2, "Political Transformations," contains 2 chapters and Part 3, "Space, Society and Livelihoods," contains 4. Chapter 9, which is by Anthony Bebbington, "Livelihood transitions, place transformations,: grounding globalization and modernity," is one of the texts most fascinating reads. The approach taken by this author, which concerns the conceptualizing livelihoods, aids greatly in tying together the various themes brought out by the essays contained in this section.
