until comparatively recently, Latin American countries have always suffered from a considerable degree of economic dependence on other nations. For example, the countries were originally settled by the colonising nations
of Europe, which led to a considerable degree of exploitation of the indigenous peoples as a result of the economic domination of nations such as Spain.
However, with the advent of the Monroe Doctrine
designed to prevent encroaching European colonisation and protect the countries of Latin America from stronger European rule, the status of Latin America in relation to the rest of the world
changed somewhat. Even though the USA proclaimed that its intention was to allow a greater level of independence to Latin America, and hence promote a greater degree of self-determination, it
was rather the case that the countries in question tended to become hidden colonies in that they were in many cases dependent nations, reliant on the US for their economic
growth and stability. There were, it is
true, several attempts to colonise the countries of Latin America through military intervention: however, since these were for the most part unsuccessful the relationship between the US and Latin America
which evolved was based primarily on trade. The foreign investment which took place during the nineteenth century, being derived from the capitalist nature of the Industrial Revolution, centred on controlling
the production and manufacture which took place in the dependent country and did not give the domestic economy the opportunity to grow and flourish in an autonomous way. It was
