background, a brief historical overview of the field of prosthetics. The purpose is to demonstrate how far this field has advanced since its inception. A very brief outline is included
here. A more comprehensive outline would be better illustrate the dramatic progress in this field, especially over the last twenty years.] Background Although there is evidence that ancient Egyptians
designed at least an artificial toe, prosthetics as a science is attributed to Ambroise Pare, a French surgeon in the 16th century. The World Wars brought significant improvements to prosthesis
as well as greater social acceptance of artificial limbs. Inventions and improvements in artificial limbs were significant beginning in about 1944. The myoelectric control system was invented, for example, giving
the patient the ability to control upper limb prosthetics using signals from their own muscles. The material used for prosthetics was also changed from leather to plastic. This made the
prosthetic a great deal lighter (Fox, 2001). Advances continued to be made in prosthetics and, in fact, remarkable achievements in this field have been made in the last two decades.
