These studies showed that there are concrete biological reasons that support the idea that teenagers need more sleep and that most teens require a little more than nine hours of sleep per night, as compared to eight hours for most adults (Dyril, 1998). One researcher put it this way, most teens are "going to bed on California time and getting up on Eastern time; its like having partial jet lag all the time" (Dyril, 1998, p. 16). In response to this information, high school districts in several states, such as Minnesota and Kentucky, have experimented with starting school later (Dyril, 1998). While In Seattle, Washington; Fairfax County, Virginia, and Montgomery County, Maryland, school communities have taken a serious look at when is the best time to start their high school classes (Lawton, 1998). In Salem, Oregon, crowded schools, in addition to sleep research, has caused school officials to experiment with a 12:20 pm to 7:30 pm school day for 300 out of its 2,000 student population (Lawton, 1998). According to Dr. Barbara Phillips, the president of the American Board of Sleep Medicine and a professor of internal medicine at the University of Kentucky in Lexington, the effects of starting the school day later are immediately obvious because teens are able to get more sleep (Lawton, 1998). According to Mary A. Carskadon, who has done considerable sleep research with adolescents, puberty causes a shift in a childs natural sleeping cycle, and this shift generally means that many teenagers have difficulty going to sleep until late at night and must, therefore, sleep later in the mornings (Lawton, 1998)..
