Each of Eriksons stages presents a crisis that must be determined The crisis in Eriksons last stage, maturity or late adulthood, is integrity vs. despair (Boeree, 2006). This stage begins about age 65, the age when people used to retire. The goal at this stage is to develop ego integrity with little despair. People must deal with the challenge of not going to work every day. They may lose their sense of purpose or feelings of usefulness and become detached from society and others (Boeree, 2006). Ego integrity is about coming to terms with ones life. Children have left home and may have children of their own. Fewer people are asking for this persons advice. For psychosocial health, individuals must be able to look back on their lives and be satisfied with the choices they made (Boeree, 2006). It isnt easy. People begin having more health problems after the age of 40 or so. In fact, the typical human body begins to break down at about age 30. We become aware of reaction times becoming slower. Women go through menopause, which affects every aspect of their lives. The older one gets, the more health problems they will have, such as arthritis, heart problems, bad backs, different kinds of cancer. Most people become weaker and may lose their balance. Friends and relatives start dying. At some point, a spouse will die. As people age, they must cope with more loss. Many older persons develop dementia, senility, Alzheimers diseases. There is little escape. Most people who live past 60 or 70 will experience both physical and cognitive declines.
