face in the fight over its decision to keep the logo. Discussion The ideological background here is relatively simple: the Constitution mandates a separation of church and state, otherwise, the
government would be a theocracy; i.e., a country in which the church makes the civil laws. Americans shake their heads and express disgust at countries like Iran, where "archaic" religious
beliefs result in penalties like stoning and beheading for what we consider minor crimes, but theres no reason to think that a Christian government would be the slightest bit different.
Because religious faith calls up strong responses in believers, the potential for abuse exists no matter what sort of religion is in charge. The founding fathers knew that and wisely
decided to keep religion out of government. In addition, the U.S. comprises more than 2,000 different religions. It would be impossible to develop fair and equitable laws based on
such a diversity of religious population segments. One case that illustrates this point is the 1980s Stone v. Graham, in which the Supreme Court found a Kentucky law that "required
public schools to display the Ten Commandments" unconstitutional (Why the Ten Commandments shouldnt be posted in government buildings). The Court ruled that "the Commandments are undeniably a sacred text and
