surgical approaches. For instance, a radiologist today can drain abscesses and unblock blood vessels in a patient who is only mildly sedated where two decades ago, the patient would
have had to undergo major surgery to achieve the same result (Anaise). This form of surgery is known as "laparoscopic," a term that derives from the name of the
major piece of equipment that makes such surgery possible. Laparoscopic surgery begins with the insertion of gas, usually carbon dioxide, into the abdominal cavity via a veress needle (Anaise).
The gas creates space within the body to allow for the insertion of instruments and to give the surgeon a clearer view of internal organs. In standard laparoscopic surgery,
the surgeon stands above the patient and makes up to four small incisions into the abdomen through which tubes, referred to as trocars, can be inserted (Bren 12). Trocars are
sharp metal cylinders through which a variety of instruments can be inserted to "dissect, tie, clip, or cauterize blood vessels" (Anaise). Secondary cannula ports are employed for retractors, which retract
tissue, and for irrigation-suction devices (Anaise). A miniature camera at the end of one of these tubes (i.e. the Labaroscope) provides a means for the surgeon to see inside
the body and guide the instrument inserted through the other tubes. With these tiny tools, the surgeon can perform minor -- and increasingly major -- procedures (Bren 12). Laparoscopic
surgery is extremely popular both with patients and insurance companies. Patients find the absence of a major incision to be cosmetically appealing. Furthermore, there is generally less pain involved. Insurance
