Renaissance is evident in this work. The focus on the human structure, the addition of specific classical images and the representation of suffering are all elements that can be
viewed in this work of art. The image depicted in Laocoon and His Sons is of the struggle, suffering and death of Laocoon, a Trojan priest, and his
sons, all of whom are being squeezed to death by serpents sent by Poseidon while he was worshipping at the alter of Poseidon. This visual icon demonstrates the depiction
of both struggle and impending death, while also supporting a common Hellenistic image of the vitality of the human form. The integration of subject and form, then, demonstrates the
way in which ancient sculpture moves the viewer from the solid form to the emotional response. The central figure in the sculpture is Laocoon, and the sculptor focuses on
the importance of the human form as a central element in this work. Classical Hellenistic artists have been noted for their focus on the human form, and the sculptor
clearly intends to create a view of Laocoon that corresponds with traditional views on beauty and power. Laocoon does not meet the modern views of what a priest would
look like, but instead, represents the ancient value placed on the human form. For example, Laocoon, though he is suffering the torture of the serpents, is posed in a
traditional position, showing the musculature of his legs and arms and allowing for a view of his rib cage and genitalia. The position used by the sculptor is not
