widely read. Douglass paints a rather optimistic picture. Other narratives are not as kind as Douglasss take on the matter, and they are also more difficult to read. Not only
are the narratives hard to take in terms of the reality of the torture and overall foul treatment of the slaves, but they are literally hard to read due to
language variances and the time frame in which they emanated. There is a communication gap. Although the narratives are translated by interviewers, some have chosen to use much of the
same speech patterns as the original slaves. Still, no matter how they are written, each of the writings convey a detailed account of a dismal time in American history.
The narratives are also difficult to read as they have over time been altered and while it seems that the author has tried to maintain the integrity of the works,
the author and other members of the project, are only human. Lankfords purpose is to publish the "testimony of those who experienced slavery in antebellum Arkansas ...in order that the
narratives can be examined at firsthand by a greater number of readers" (Lankford, 2003, p. xii-xiii). His goal in essence is to explore, authenticate and publish this documentation so
that the society will become more aware of what happened during those depressing days. It is possible that there are flaws in the work even though they come from a
highly credentialed editor. Lankford in fact admits that the narratives are problematic in and of themselves. At the same time, what comes out of the project is all good. It
is not that the information depicts a positive experience but rather, the data relayed is informative and serves to inspire. Some of the stories or dismal but they all offer
