While in todays world it is not uncommon for an individual to speak two or more languages, their native language reveals tremendous insight into just who that person is and the social factors that they have developed in accordance with. Languages, of course, evolve over vast periods of time. They evolve to meet the needs of a particular people in a particular set of environmental conditions. The language of a Sherpa sheep herder is consequently vastly different from modern day English. While the latter has expanded to include words for our ever-expanding technology, beliefs, and lifeways; the former is largely limited to a vocabulary that was necessitated by life needs for hundreds of years. Just as there has been little evolution in the Sherpa language nor has there been the kind of evolution that characterizes the English language for most of the worlds more "primitive" cultures. It is important to emphasize, however, that the term "primitive" itself is really defined by culture. What modern-day American perceive as "primitive" is typically in actuality cultures that work exceedingly well in their own environment.
