very powerful individuals who are struggling in a world of sales. They are men who are doing whatever is necessary to survive, and to make a bit of money. But, as the plays progress there seems to be a sense that the language becomes emptier, that the meaning in the language loses itself which, in turn, ensures that the characters themselves are seen as emptier, if not empty. The following paper examines how the language is emptied of meaning by the end of the plays by Miller and Mamet. Language in Miller and Mamets Plays Arthur Millers play is an incredibly powerful play wherein the main character, Willy Loman, begins the play as an apparently strong and determined man who feels the future is his. He believes, in the beginning, that he is "vital in New England" and his success is just around the corner (Miller 14). His belief, concerning success, is ultimately focused, for Willy, on whether or not a person is liked by other, not whether he works hard and is intelligent. The reader/viewer, however, learns that he is "exhausted" through his wife who strongly notes how "attention must be paid" urging one to note the importance of Willy and inadvertently showing the importance and meaning of the language in the beginning (Miller 56). Even though he is not "the finest character that ever lived" he does deserve some respect or notice (Miller 56). By the end of the play Willy has run out, emotionally, intellectually, spiritually and physically as he commits suicide. His struggles seem pointless and as such the language is weaker, dying in the end as the only urgency is presented through one of his sons and even that urgency is empty because Willys life was ultimately empty.
