important aspect of the culture of the people who speak it. We, more often than not, merely think of different languages as something that separates people from one another. But, buried within every language on earth is a very powerful cultural identity that all but defines a culture. Each language has its own unique set of words, nuances, and even moments of silence which help to define a culture and keep it strong. The following paper examines the Latino culture and the use of the Spanish language as an expression of culture. Now, obviously, the Latino culture is not just one particular culture, but many different cultures. But, the language itself, which is also as diverse, serves as a perfect subject for study since it is a language that is spoken in many places, yet receives a great deal of prejudice in our nation. As such it is perhaps incredibly important that we understand something of the significance of the language spoken by the Latino people. Spanish and the Latino People In first examining the subject, we turn to a discussion of early childhood, which is where and when people become truly connected with their culture through language. "Infants learn a language for the purpose of functioning in a particular cultural and language community-that is, language allows us to be able to communicate in a culturally appropriate manner within a particular linguistic community. It is the cultural community, including the family and other members, who identify the key concepts and categories that are important to consider and pass them on across generations" (S?nchez, 1999).
