people do not often think about when they consider prejudices. But, in truth, people often immediately judge someone judged on how they speak, instantly realizing a sense of prejudice without
even realizing they have done so. The following paper examines this perspective. Language and Prejudice In looking into this particular topic one article illustrates how people who speak
English, but are perhaps from NY or the South, are immediately seen as less than intelligent because of how they speak. The author offers up an example of an individual
who is suffering from headaches and his doctor sends him to a specialist. When he meets the specialist the doctor speaks as follows: "Ya got a pain in da noggin.
Dont sweat it; Im gonna fix ya up. Hey, nois! Ovuh heah! Bring me dat watchamacallit. How da hell am I gonna take care of my patient heah if you
dont hand me dem tools? Dats a goil" (Preston, 2008). This is something that appears to be a very New York accent and one that quickly sends this patient running
for they will immediately assume this doctor is an idiot, despite the fact that language, ones particular style of speaking, has never been proven as an indicator of intelligence (Preston,
2008). Preston (2008) states that, "Linguists know that language variety does not correlate with intelligence or competence, so Dr. Cramden could well be one of the best brain surgeons
in town." This is something, in terms of the reaction anyone would have in this situation, that indicates how people immediately presume something about a speaker, possessing prejudices and likely
