only form of communication, but it is the form of communication that we use to interact with everyone we meet. It is something that is misunderstood, confusing, and incredibly powerful
for it brings people together in ways that would not be possible otherwise. One of the ways we use language to help get out points across, to make ourselves universally
understood, is through metaphors. The following paper first presents metaphors for friendship, discussing and explaining them, and then discusses the important of language. Friends The first metaphor is
as follows: "A friend is like a favorite book that you can always return to, finding the joy and sorrow in the story." In this we see that there is
something predictable and comfortable in an old friend. The trials, the struggles represented in the story, have been experienced and thus the friendship has been tried. There is a sense
that whatever happens, whatever new chapters may come up, the friendship has already bee founded, been written, and will remain true and strong. There is also the aspect of this
metaphor that applies to remembering the past of a friendship so that one can share it with the friend like a book. They can remember the good and bad times
and still love the book, the friendship. Friends can cry together over the hard parts, and love and laugh together in the fun. The next metaphor is "A friendship
is like a sword in the fire, the more it gets tested the stronger it grows." A true friendship will only get stronger with the challenges. At times it may
seem as though it may get unbearably hot or tense, but a real friendship will grow stronger with each forging in the fire, not weaker. If, however, it is not
