to feelings, thoughts, ideals, possibilities. The spoken language is the foundation of much that is human. Without language, the spoken word, and the interchange of ideas and thoughts, the written
word would not have become part of human existence. Songs and books and religions and all we possess, in terms of communication, would not exist. As such language is clearly
a very powerful part of the identity of the human race. At the same time it is a very individual element as well. Individuals use language to express themselves and
although people may speak the same, or a similar language, a person will ultimately make language their own, speaking in a way that is unique to them in many ways.
The following paper examines the connection between language and identity as seen through three different articles/essays. Language and Identity In one article, an individual who is of Latino
descent illustrates the powerful complexity of the language of her people, a very diverse people. She illustrates how she was often punished as a child for speaking Spanish, or speaking
English like a Mexican. She goes on to illustrate how her people, and especially her, truly employ many different forms of language. There are forms of Spanish spoken with different
types of Spanish people. There is proper Spanish, slang Spanish, Tex-Mex Spanish, and ultimately she indicates that there are 7-8 different types of languages she employs depending on who she
is with. When she goes somewhere she must employ the particular type of language she must to communicate. In essence her story illustrates that language is incredibly diverse and it
is really a way of identifying oneself with a group of people, as well as a way of identifying oneself unto themselves.
