there are clusters of Spanish speaking peoples, and each have their own dialects. Just as Americans want the people of the nation to speak English only, the natives hold tight to their language as that is what they have to distinguish themselves from others. Language is a form of communication and there are things called idioms where one cannot actually translate a phrase or word verbatim. These idioms mean something distinct to a particular culture and so in some way, language becomes very significant. Idioms cannot be translated. Hence, if these words are lost, so is a part of the culture. There are so many aspects tied to culture from traditions that are associated with holidays to foods that are prepared in the kitchen to certain forms of entertainment or sports. Certain foods for example are referred to in certain ways but are a part of a specific culture. If translated into English, something would be lost. Potato latkes become pancakes and quesadillas becomes pizza. Something is lost in the translation. Also, even if one were to lose their language, and retain some of their own culture, something important would be lost. In the United States today, Spanish communities demand that papers and bank ATMs use Spanish. Many products on store shelves are bilingual in nature. This tendency to associate ones self with ones native language is a clear sign that language is important to culture. The relationship between language and culture is larger than life. When people do infiltrate a community from a foreign country perhaps, the language is what distinguishes one from another group. For example, in Brooklyns Brighton Beach there is an influx of Russians. They speak Russian almost exclusively and while they purportedly can speak English, the community tends to isolate itself.
