it is not only in multilingual nations that the complexities can occur even in nations which are not officially multilingual die to the presence for regional dialects as well as
an increasing level of migration across the world. If we look to the historical perspective there are some very valuable lessons where a dominant culture has sought to eradicate or
overshadow to use of minority language, especially those that are native to the country. One example where this occurred is in Australia where language was seen as part of an
alien culture by the immigrants and sought to teach all native children to speak English. The results have been a long lasting and created resentment by many aboriginals who saw
this attempt to eradicate their language as part of a wider attempt to devalue and eradicate their culture. The difficulties that have
been caused are lasting for generations and have resulted in resentment and increased hostility as well as the high price paid by the aboriginal in terms of the way oral
traditions and traditional heritage was lost. However, when we look at the language policy here it was part of a larger and broader ranging policy, but was also symbolic of
the boarder policies in addition to having direct impact. The policies which have sought to exclude a language that can be seen
as native or adopted by a country have often resulted in similar discontent. The underlying reason for this is that language is a strong symbol of culture and are part
of personal make up for all individuals, by rejecting that it is not only the use of the dialect words that are rejected but all that the language represents, creating
