Immigrants arrive here daily from around the world and many speak little if any English. This presents problems at every societal level. Not only do these individuals have
problems in the workplace and school, they have problems going about their daily activities and procuring needed services like medical help. Language is a skill which allows us to communicate
our thoughts to others and in so doing to attain desired the feedback we desire from the world. Those with language barriers must, therefore, have a need to obtain
some form of feedback yet the specifics of that feedback is critical in determining whether these individuals will succeed or fail in their new homes. Our language frames our
world and without an adequate frame we flounder mercilessly. Most of us are familiar with the problem of language barriers to one degree or another. We have
become accustomed, for example, to immigrants from Mexico have left their own country in search of a better life. The economic and social hardships that they faced in Mexico
have propelled them hundreds and sometimes thousands of miles from home and landed them square in the middle of one of the most prosperous nations on earth. Some of
these immigrants have arrived here legally but others have arrived illegally. A common problem that many have, however, is they have limited command of the English language. Our country
is, of course, a magnet for immigrants from all over the world. Not surprisingly, some eight million illegal immigrants currently reside in the United States (Stevenson and Greenhouse, 2004).
