Hunter demonstrated that successful approaches to teaching and highly effective teachers shared common characteristics and components. The purpose here is to devise three lesson plans that follow Hunters eight-point plan for an effective lesson. Madeline Hunters Lesson Cycle Robinson and Crawford (2004) report that the research of Dr. Madeline Hunter revealed that effective teachers approached teaching in a methodical way. Regardless of "the teachers style, grade level, subject matter, or economic background of the students a properly taught lesson contained eight elements that enhanced and maximized learning" (Robinson and Crawford, 2004). The eight components of the Hunter approach are: * Anticipatory Set (focus) - focuses the students attention on the lesson that is about to occur; * Purpose (objective) - "The purpose of todays lesson, why the students need to learn it, what they will be able to do, and how they will show learning as a result are made clear by the teacher" (Robinson and Crawford, 2004); * Input - information students need to be successful with the lesson; * Modeling (show) - "The teacher shows in graphic form or demonstrates what the finished product looks like" (Robinson and Crawford, 2004); * Guided practice "(follow me) - The teacher leads the students through the steps necessary to perform the skill using the trimodal approach - hear/see/do" (Robinson and Crawford, 2004); * Checking For Understanding (CFU) - The teacher actively seeks feedback from students to assess their understanding of the concepts; * Independent practice - The students are able to practice the new concepts without the teachers supervision or input; and * Closure - Review and assessment of students grasp of the lesson content (Robinson and Crawford, 2004).
