consist of "listening, speaking, reading and writing" (Cox, 1999 as qtd. in David, & Capraro, 2001, p.80). Strategies for teaching language arts include the development of oral communication skills
as well as enhancing a students background experience in respect to reading and writing (2001). There are a variety of skills necessary to absorb language arts, the first of which
is listening. Before learning how to do anything, a child should learn the art of careful listening. Listening and speaking skills are in fact developed with the use of oral
communication and they are also critical to childrens social and academic development (Au, 1993 as cited in David, & Capraro, 2001). Butler and Stevens (1997 as cited in
David, & Capraro, 2001) state that students listen prior to the development of the ability to read and write (1997). That is obviously the case because infants and
toddlers must be able to listen and speak before tackling language in written form. They learn how to communicate by listening to what another person says and then they express
their ideas through oral communication. It is believed that fluent oral interaction between peers is needed in the classroom environment as a predecessor to writing (Tierney & Readance, 2000 as
cited in David, & Capraro, 2001) . Again, there are few who would argue that point. Further, group discussion generally reflects the childrens overall self-image (Butler & Stevens, 1997
as cited in David, & Capraro, 2001). This point adds another dimension to language arts theory and development as it is noted that self-image is connected to communication skills.
