English skill development. A number of methods have been employed to improve the performance of ELLs on assessments of language performance. Theorists have reflected on the specific components
of language instruction, especially those used with English proficient learners, in order to assess their impacts on the acquisition process for ELLs (Green, 2005). Researchers suggest that there are
some common steps in language acquisition that can be used for ELLs. First of all, have students read the text silently or aloud to a partner, then discussion should
follow as to meaning using small groups. Vocabulary discussion should occur with the whole class, making use of cognates and context clues, pointing out spelling patterns, such as "tion" in
English is "cion" in Spanish (Green, 2005). Clarify and explain words in context that cannot be figured out from cognates or context (Green, 2005). English lacks specific markers that
are often evident in other languages that help define what part of speech a word happens to be (Green, 2005). For example, Spanish has different words for the various meanings
of the English word "play," which can be a noun, a verb or an adjective in English use (Green, 2005). Considering this, Green (2005) goes on to describe the work
