Renaissance, that extraordinary flowering of African American culture (literature, painting, music; art of all kinds) that took place in Harlem in the early part of the 20th century, and came to its fullest expression in the 1920s. This paper discusses Hughess life, his works-particularly his poetry-and how they relate to his life and express his worldview. Discussion Langstons life is amazing: he lived all over the world and the longest time he stayed in one place appears to have been a year he spent in California (Dyson and Bloom). His mother Carrie appears to have been somewhat unstable and his father was that oddity, a black man who disliked blacks, considering them inferior (Dyson and Bloom). Hughes was shuttled back and forth between his mother and his grandmother for several years, then just after he finished high school he went to Mexico to spend time with his father (Dyson and Bloom). On his trip to see his father, Hughes wrote one of his best known poems, "The Negro Speaks of Rivers": "Ive known rivers: / Ive known rivers ancient as the world and older / than the flow of human blood in human veins. / My soul has grown deep like the rivers. / I bathed in the Euphrates when the dawns were / young. / I built my hut near the Congo and it lulled me to / sleep. / I looked upon the Nile and raised the pyramids / above it. / I heard the singing of the Mississippi when Abe / Lincoln went down to New Orleans, and Ive seen / its muddy bosom turn all golden in the sunset. / Ive known rivers: / Ancient, dusky rivers. / My soul has grown deep like rivers" (Dyson and Bloom).
