With these simple elements of understanding in place the following paper examines the landscaping of these simple homes, and also discusses how similar homes were seen in Vancouver, BC as the architects were influenced by the California bungalow. Landscaping of California Bungalows One author notes that, "One of the most interesting ways the bungalow identified with the California life style was through its garden" (Sessions, 2005). This author also notes that a leading landscape architect of the time illustrated how many people in bungalows desired a park like setting in their yards, but yet a park like setting that was not demanding in terms of upkeep (Sessions, 2005). "Few pictures of these bungalow gardens remain, and even fewer actual bungalow gardens" although "Californians, drenched with sunshine, were especially conscious of their gardens" (Sessions, 2005). It has also been noted that many bungalow owners varied in their ideas of what a true garden should be. They dreamed of formal English type gardens to Oriental gardens (Sessions, 2005). This suggests that the garden aspect of the bungalow was incredibly important to the house and the home owners as they wanted a clear relationship with the nature that surrounded their home (Sessions, 2005).
